The Singapore Week of Innovation & Technology (SWITCH), October 25-28, was back this year to bring together entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, innovators and industry players to improve the global-Asian innovation ecosystem.
Focused on deep tech applications, it provides opportunities for closer collaboration and knowledge sharing between startups, small and medium-sized enterprises, investors, corporate and innovation departments, research and development organizations, and local and international government agencies.
Last year more than 15,000 participants from 42 countries gathered at SWITCH. This year, SWITCH is again larger than a fully in-person conference, encompassing innovation programs including a Sectoral Thought Leadership Stage, Market Access Sessions and Industry Exhibition Showcases and Roundtable Sessions.
One of the highly anticipated events is the SLINGSHOT 2022 Startup Pitching Sector Finals and Grand Finals, organized by Enterprise SG in partnership with AWS to provide additional support to participating startups. SLINGSHOT 2022 returned this year for its sixth edition, giving global startups the opportunity to immerse themselves in Singapore’s innovative business landscape and explore opportunities for growth and expansion within the region’s dynamic market.
SLINGSHOT2022 was open to global startups currently working on one of five new challenge areas: Transformative Digital Technologies; Environment, Energy and Green Technology; consumer media, goods and services; health and biomedicine; Manufacturing, trading and connectivity. The top 50 startups will receive a sponsored trip to Singapore for the grand finals during SWITCH to showcase and introduce their startups to win prizes worth SGD 1.2 million.
Opening doors for startups in ASEAN
SLINGSHOT, organized by Enterprise SG, allowed the top startups to experience an insightful immersion into Singapore’s business and innovation industry. Enterprise SG wanted to encourage startups to realize their potential and develop solutions to accelerate their growth in the region and beyond through this initiative.
Enterprise SG has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide startups participating in SLINGSHOT 2022 with access to key tools and services that can help them realize plans for their products.

AWS supported the SLINGSHOT finalists by providing its cloud computing expertise and mentorship. Through the AWS Public Sector Startup Ramp, a program designed to guide early-stage startups in building and adopting solutions in diverse sectors including healthcare, digital government, agriculture, smart cities and space technology, finalists gained access to the global Startup community of AWS members and partners, relevant training, and AWS credits.
AWS also supported startups through AWS Activate, which provided tools, resources, content, and expert support to help startups build, accelerate, and scale at every stage.
Samuel Harris, Public Sector Startup Lead, Asia Pacific and Japan at AWS said, “AWS is committed to empowering all startups with the tools, guidance, and mentorship they need to transform industries. We’re excited to partner with Enterprise SG at SLINGSHOT 2022 to inspire startups to build and innovate on AWS Cloud, and help accelerate and scale businesses that drive societal benefit and economic development.”
Building global networks with the AWS-SWITCH Networking Nodes
The AWS-SWITCH Networking Nodes took place in three Amazon offices worldwide: San Francisco (September 16), London (September 20) and Hyderabad (September 23). The AWS-SWITCH Networking Nodes are for startups to learn about the programs and resources that can be used to build and scale innovative solutions on AWS and how to accelerate growth via Enterprise Singapore to leverage their Expand business to Singapore and the US region.
The three locations were chosen as they were startup hotspots and saw an influx of signups for SLINGSHOT. AWS and ESG organized these sessions together – they invited startups in their networks to attend the sessions and used their ecosystem partners to share their experiences on innovation and expansion.
The AWS-SWITCH Networking Nodes hosted SLINGSHOT grantees in a series of technical and networking sessions that allowed them to meet and connect with local startup founders and industry leaders.

The sessions are designed to educate attendees on the various AWS programs and resources they can use to experiment with their ideas, develop existing products, and scale their innovative solutions according to their desired markets. The sessions also allowed attendees to seek support from Enterprise SG to accelerate and expand their presence in Singapore and the region.
The panel discussion took place on the subject of “Innovation as a driver for international expansion”. Guest panelists included Vinayak Ganapuram (Vice President, Head of Engineering, Crayon Data), who helped provide the startup perspective on the processes and challenges of growth and expansion; Zaran Bhagwagar (Principal, Anthill Ventures), who shared their successful ventures and the investor’s perspective in enabling the startup ecosystem; and Regional Directors of Enterprise Singapore, who reported on programs and initiatives Enterprise Singapore is running to drive innovation in each geographic location.
Immersion day in Singapore
Ahead of the SWITCH 2022 Grand Finals, AWS hosted SLINGSHOT’s Top 50 Global Startups at the AWS Singapore office as part of the immersion program on October 21st. During this session, the participating startups learned more about how organizations are using AWS to innovate and participated in a workshop on AWS Amplify – an all-in-one solution that enables developers to accelerate the development of full-stack web and mobile applications.

Innovation through partnerships
The collaboration between AWS, SWITCH, SLINGSHOT and Enterprise SG aims to redefine the startup industry. It shows the power that collaboration brings to every aspect of a startup company in today’s digital world. Asia is driving global growth and Singapore is at the heart of the action. While competition is fierce, collaboration makes organizations more robust and resilient.
