Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s visit to Saudi Arabia this month highlighted China’s dependence on the Gulf for energy supplies and its ambitions to expand its influence among the region’s traditional US security partners. Xi wants to boost exports and investment in the Middle East, while Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman wants to confirm the kingdom’s role as a regional player and help China build its defense and nuclear industries.
