Herschel Walker loses Georgia Senate bid to incumbent Raphael Warnock

Let's hope we don't have to hear from Herschel Walker for a long, long time.

Herschel Walker failed to break through or jump over Senator Warlock’s blue wall Tuesday night. As the last surviving Trump-backed candidate running for state office, Walker’s resounding loss capped a disastrous election cycle for Trump’s prominent political offspring. And just like the USFL’s failed Trump-led challenge to the NFL, Georgia Republicans had nothing to show for the RNC’s decision to follow Trump off a cliff. At least the USFL got three dollars.

Walker’s entire Senate campaign was a disgrace to every Georgia voter. Perhaps the most uninformed candidate the GOP has ever fielded, he embodied the right-wing’s growing obsession with treating elections like a prominent issue of Survivor.

Why choose a seasoned intellectual when you could just entrust it to celebrities who have no idea what public service means, except when it’s time to cut their own taxes? Walker’s most detailed policy proposal was a department that “can deal with young men and women, that is, with social media.”

The beginning of his campaign was an insult to the dignity of Georgia’s African American voters. Disgraced ex-President Donald Trump thought Walker on the ballot could counter the urban black vote that brought Warnock to the polls in his 2020 runoff victory over Kelly Loeffler. Walker could have presented himself as a black conservative candidate who served as a megaphone for the truthful concerns of a contingent of black Republicans. Instead, he parroted after every far-right Republican and ranted about “revival culture,” spewing toxic rhetoric at the trans community. In response, Walker was rejected by Atlanta and the surrounding suburbs.

Walker’s Texas residency, little war with his own son, his track record of domestic violence, mental health issues, his broadcast abortion hypocrisy, habitual lying, and RNC-appointed escorts show how unprepared and inadequate he was. Walker’s ignorance of political issues and showing up to rallies or debates where he stumbled over words as if he were a high school student improvising an oral book account of a novel he had never touched.

Walker’s candidacy was a bigger dud than his Viking career. There, at least, he could be immortalized because he was the subject of a trade that produced a dynasty…for the cowboys. For the second straight election cycle, Trump’s coup-supporting candidates have fallen.

As surreal as it may seem that a lobotomy patient could garner 1.7 million votes from an electorate in a purple state, it’s not entirely surprising. The Overton window has been falling for years. The GOP is more interested in plug-and-play candidates who automatically provide name recognition, a lackey they can enlist for automatic “yes” votes, and help them maintain the supremacy of the pure white males to whom their base has become accustomed. The next wagon GOP primary voters hang on to will likely be Ye in a “White Lives Matter” shirt or Stacey Dash.

In the final weeks of his runoff, Walker disappeared from the campaign trail for days and weeks, Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan declared that he was joining a chorus of reliable right-wing voters who could not support Walker, and Walker began riffing about vampires when the GOP establishment slowly realized that the runoff was a lost cause. Walker was chewed up and spat out on election night in America, and then Walker’s vomited bones delivered a lukewarm concession speech after his path to victory was slammed in what was the most graceful thing he’s done in a year.

Walker will return to Texas and hopefully be forgotten, but his blemish will remain.
