For the fair-weather soccer fans, and let’s face it, that’s 99 percent or more of American sports fans, the World Cup is the only event that spans several weeks and has a high level of public interest. The United States men’s national team failed to make the top 32 in the world in 2018, and a large segment of American fans skipped the extravagance. But the Americans are back in 2022. Let me tell you, a lot has changed in eight years. And some things haven’t changed an iota.

This year’s World Cup will put some of the world’s best players through their paces and serve as an introduction to Earth for the next big stars. As 270 minutes dictates the trajectory of the world’s top programs, some bigger names will also be cutting their international careers at the event (if you look at Uruguay).
