Vietnamese esports organization Saigon Buffalo, known for its League of Legends team, has been acquired by South Korean company JUEGO.

The new owners have acquired 100% of the organization and will retire the Saigon Buffalo branding. The team will continue to exist as CNJ Esports in the future to align with JUEGO’s existing esports brand. Financial details were not disclosed.

JUEGO, the new owners of Saigon Buffalo, are an esports-focused think tank based in South Korea. The company specialized in football-related projects before launching its own eSports brand, CNJ Esports, in 2021. CNJ is also behind DH.CNJ (Daejeon Hana CNJ), an eSports team co-founded with Daejeon Hana Citizen, a club from K League, Korea’s top soccer league.

Saigon Buffalo is one of the most successful League of Legends teams in Vietnam, competing in the country’s top division, the VCS. Founded in 2016 as Young Generation, the team went through several name changes before settling on the Buffalo branding. Buffalo’s biggest achievements are winning two splits of the VCS in 2018 and 2019 and qualifying for the LoL Worlds in 2017, 2018 and 2022. Most recently, the team placed 19th at the 2022 League of Legends World Championships.

In an interesting move, Saigon told Buffalo it was looking for investors on Twitter earlier this year, attracting interest from various brands and investors such as TK Nguyen, CEO of NRG Asia, and Jeff Zirlin, co-founder of Axie Infinity. In the end it was JUEGO who bought the company.

In an exclusive interview for Esports Insider, Su Yong Park, JUEGO’s executive director, noted that the company wants to be another link between Vietnam and South Korea: “In the industry, there is Samsung. In terms of sports, there are Korean coaching staff for the Vietnamese national teams, and in terms of entertainment, there is a Vietnamese member of the K-pop music group NewJeans. We want to be the eSports link between countries.”

Park added that Saigon Buffalo’s original roster has great potential, but the first steps will be focused on creating a stable and high-quality eSports department. After that, the new owners will delve deeper into the performance.

Su Yong Park added in a press release, “Our goal is to build a global company by utilizing elements of Korean esports armed with a mythical story. Vietnam, which already has many ties to Korean society and has enormous potential, was seen as a key market. CNJ Esports will inherit Saigon Buffalo’s legacy and we ask for your attention as we are reborn as a new esports company representing Asia and focused on Vietnam and Korea.”
